A swollen injury — when and how to use cold for faster recovery?
Short answer: cold is best applied as soon as possible after an injury, ideally within the first 24–48 hours. In-clinic cryotherapy allows for more controlled, more effective cold application than a home ice pack.
Why swelling is a sign to act fast
Swelling after an injury is a sign of the body's inflammatory response — the longer you wait, the harder the swelling is to bring down.
How cryotherapy speeds up recovery
Controlled cold constricts blood vessels, reduces inflammation, and temporarily numbs the painful area.
When cold isn't enough on its own
If swelling doesn't ease after a few days of icing, or comes with severe pain and an inability to bear weight, it's time for an assessment by a physiotherapist or doctor.
The sooner after the injury, the better.
